AIMS/OBJECTIVE/LEARNING OUTCOME
English literature is a product of historical circumstances. There is a complex intercalation between literature and its contexts. Literature functions as a critical reflection on people and society in history and on the ways in which people make historical sense of their lives. It is the aim of the course to expand the relation between texts and contexts, and provide a firm foundation for historically contextualized literary study. In the general organization of the texts and modules , the Board of English studies of Berhampur university has farmed syllabus keeping in view the requirements of under graduate studies in English and kind of literary traditions, periods and texts that are widely taught and studied in universities and colleges around the world.
According CBCS Pattern, a student of English will have to appear six semester examinations during the three year-degree course under Berhampur University.
1st Semester Examination
1st Semester Examination includes two Core Course which teaches a student British poetry and Drama from 14th century to 18th century.
AIM
The two paper aims to acquaint a student with an exploration of certain seminal texts that set the course of British poetry and plays and to know the context with a historical overview.
OBJECTIVE
The objectives of these two papers are to inform a student about the literary trends and characteristics of the period that reflects the perception of man under renaissance and reformation.
LEARNING OUTCOME
A student is greatly influenced by the spirit of renaissance and the sweeping changes the ushered in the domain of religion and politics during reformation. Accordingly a student’s perception is sharpened by the events during the period which are marked by expansion leads both outer and inner recesses of human being. Moreover, a student’s critical faculty is enriched by a sense of aesthetics of poetry and drama teaching.
2nd Semester Examination
The second semester examination comprises two paper : which import the 18th century British literature and Indian writing in English.
AIM
The core 3rd aims to acquaint the students with three remarkable forms of literature: such as essay, poetry and novel and the core Paper 4th aims to introduce students a vibrant body of Indian writing in English through some representative works.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of core paper 3rd is to inform the students about a major shift of literary torte from reason to emotion. The objective of core paper –IV is to introduce students to a class of native mixers whose roots to a embedded in Indian soil but reaching out to a larger audience.
LEARNING OUTCOME
A student will be enlightened about the quality of English literature as well as Indian mixings in English.
3rd Semester Examination
The third semester examination comprises three paper such as Indian classical literature, European classical literature an American literature.
Core paper V/VI/VII Aims
Paper V and VI aims at creating awareness among the student of the rich and diverse literary culture of ancient India as well as European classical literature. The paper-VII aims at creating awareness of the varied thanes of American literature.
OBJECTIVE
To acquaint student about richness of Indian Classical literature as well as the origins of the European can on including multiculturalism of American literature.
LEARNING OUTCOME
Students will be enriched with a vast literary texture of three different cultures and their themes which in turn will have great impact on students’ intellectual faculty.
4th Semester Examination
The fourth semester examination comprises three papers such as popular literature, British Romantic literature and 19th century British literature as Paper VIII,IX and X respectively.
Core paper V/VI/VII Aims
The paper VIII aims introducing students to different genres of literature such as romance, detective fiction, campus fiction, fantasy and mythology which strong appeals the general mars. The paper IX aims at acquainting the students with the Romantic period and some of its representative mixers. The paper X sucks to expose students to the literature produced in Britain during 19th century.
OBJECTIVE
The 8th paper helps a student to gain better understating of the popular roots of literature. The objective of 9th paper is to give the students with a broad idea of the social as well as historical context that brought about a change in literary expression. The 10th paper’s objective is to acquaint students with the phenomenal changes during the period called the regency, Victorian and late upheavals.
LEARNING OUTCOME
The student will be informed about the cultural transformation in different historical context which shaped the great upheavals.
5th Semester Examination
The 5th Semester examination comprises two papers such as women’s mixings and early twentieth century British literature.
AIMS
The XI paper aims to acquaint students with the complex and multifaceted literature of the world reflecting the diverse experiences and their varied cultural mornings. The XII paper aims to familiarize the students with the new literature of protein in the early decades of the twentieth century.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of paper XI is to familiarize students with concerns of women’s literary history women’s studies and feminist criticism. Similarly the objective of Paper XII paper is the focus on the modernist canon, war poetry and social poetry and literary criticism of 1930’s.
LEARNING OUTCOME
A student’s inner up bringing will be father enriched by the cultural and literary sensibility of the periods.
6th Semester Examination
The sixth semester examination comprise of two papers entitled as modern European Drama and post-colonial l literature.
AIMS
The core paper XII aims to introduce the students to the best of experimental and innovative dramatic literature of modern Europe. Similarly the XIV core paper seeks to introduce the students to post-colonial literature that responds to the discourses of European colonialism situated in varied locations and their no part impact narrated in representative texts.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of paper 13 is the familiarize students with purposelessness of existence in experimental plays of the Avant-garde-writer.
The objective of paper 14th is to provide a scope to understand the ling response emerged through compliance, resistance, mimicry and subversion that colonial has provided from the national in their search for a literature of their own.

A students reading of a great number of literary texts shaped by the trends of the period which will definitely help him to understand mains journey across time to the present era and the development of human experiences.
